FILM CAREER!? - In Front Of Camera......

In late 1998 I got involved in the Virginia film industry . I was in the production of "Legacy" a cable television soap for UPN, a period piece about a horse breeding farm of 1890. For this program I was an "extra" as a horseman. I went on the set a number of times until in early 99 the series was "canned". In this first shot "we" are all standing around waiting for the completion of another scene, it is bloody freezing! it was also the very last day of filming down in Petersburg Virginia in a street scene.

Later, I was called for a part in a documentary? about Linden Johnson. It is titled "LBJ Tapes", based on his phone calls from the oval office. This was filmed by IT3 an independant from England but the series was also sponsored by The Learning Channel which will air the work in the summer of 99. I will be seen in the last episode (#4), Unless I end up on the cutting room floor!!!

Also in early 99 I frequented the set of "Cherry Falls" a big screen film (a teen slasher movie). I was usually an extra as an FBI Photographer (seen here at far left). This is an early scene in the film to be shown probably around Halloween ( Go Figure!) this was a particularly difficult scene for the central figure as she had to stay suspended on the tree as though nailed there. Thanks to Debbie for the photo - at far right.

In the third quarter of 99 I was called for work in the television mini-series "Monticello" which was later called " The Sally Hemmings Story" its original written title. I had anticipated being involved on the set with horses but ended up in the dance scenes. These photos are of the "Palace of Versailles" set at the Kings court, shot at Maymont park in Richmond Va. One of the stars in this piece is Sam Neill.

This first photo is the dance crew, we are taking a look at the area of the set and practicing to size up the space that is available. Most of these photos were snapped by Tom M who I thank and also by Gwen G. the film choreographer. For more information about dancing and dance studios / instruction see the Ballroom dance page .

Beginning to get ready for the set, Here Wendy's gang some of the nicest ladies you could ever hope to meet from (L) Amanda, Wendy, yours truly, Nadine and Tanya in early stages of costume dressing.

Above, many hours of hanging around and getting hair and make up. Here John B and myself having the wigs installed. This is much worse than having to wear a hat all day and the weather did not help.

Below, most of the gang is now ready and waiting to go on set.

On (L) we once again have Wendy and on the (R) we have Rosemary R. This is in holding waiting for the scene to be set up.

This is an excellent picture on set with Ross.

Very often on set with the humidity make up runs around and re-touches everyones make up or removes sweat! Here qued up are Nancy, Linda and Nadine, we are actually on our way to another shot location but got accosted on route.

Here during a break I have a quick lie down with the ladies! The days are very very long but moments like these are priceless!

One of the major attractions to me for  working on film sets is that everyone is having a great time doing the work and they are a very professional and happy bunch. ( For the most part!)   And you meet such an interesting bunch of people from all walks of life.

The days can be very long, starting very early and sometimes there are many hours of complete inactivity for the extras while other scenes are shot or set up.

For anyone remotely interested in this kind of work there are  many supporting internet resources. I have listed the  more local sites of interest here. Email me with any others that you think should be here, or for more information.
